Mercedes-Benz Berlin plant welcomes new leadership in 2017 transition

The Mercedes-Benz Berlin plant is set for a leadership change at the start of 2017. Hansgeorg Niefer, the current plant director, retired on 30 September after more than five years in the role. Taking his place will be René Reif, who will officially begin as site manager on 1 January. Hansgeorg Niefer, aged 60, joined Mercedes-Benz in 1986, working in process development at the Sindelfingen plant. A mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Stuttgart, he later led Mercedes-Benz South Africa as President and CEO from 2005 to 2011. In May 2011, he took over the Berlin plant, where he oversaw its transformation into a high-tech centre for component production. His tenure also saw the introduction of CO₂-reduction measures.

René Reif, 53, started his career in 1990 as a production engineer at the same Berlin plant. Currently, he serves as Head of Engineering and Manufacturing for Mercedes-Benz Cars at BBAC in Beijing. His return to Berlin marks a new chapter for the facility as it continues its focus on advanced manufacturing.

Niefer’s retirement concludes a long career with Mercedes-Benz, including key roles in production and international leadership. Reif’s appointment brings experience from both the Berlin plant and overseas operations. The transition will take effect at the beginning of next year.
