Homophobic slur in Berlin triggers violent confrontation with three injured
A homophobic slur in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district sparked a violent confrontation yesterday morning. The altercation began at a convenience store and later moved to the U8 platform at Hermannplatz, leaving three people injured. The incident started when a 31-year-old store employee directed homophobic remarks at two men, aged 32 and 33. A verbal argument quickly escalated, and the employee struck both men in the head with a glass bottle. In response, the 32-year-old grabbed another bottle and hit the employee back.
Meanwhile, the 33-year-old had arranged to meet an unidentified man on the U8 platform to recover a backpack he had left at the store earlier. The stranger demanded money for the bag before assaulting the 33-year-old with his fists. A 47-year-old street vendor who tried to intervene was then struck in the head with a rock by the same assailant, who fled the scene immediately after.
All three victims suffered head injuries, with the 32-year-old also sustaining an arm injury. The 33-year-old and his 36-year-old companion were taken to a hospital for outpatient treatment.
The Berlin State Criminal Police Office’s political extremism and hate crime unit has taken over the investigation. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack. The case remains under active investigation by Berlin police. The three injured individuals received medical attention, while the assailant who fled the scene has not yet been identified. Police have not released further details at this stage.
