Wiesbaden transport strike halts services as workers demand fairer conditions

A strike disrupted transport services on Monday after negotiations between ESWE Verkehr and the ver.di union broke down last week. Lena Petri, the company’s union liaison, confirmed that talks had failed on Thursday, with further discussions planned for Tuesday. Workers are pushing for improved conditions rather than higher wages, according to deputy representative Steffen Münkel. The strike aimed to pressure employers ahead of the next round of negotiations. Petri acknowledged the frustration among commuters but stressed that workers were fighting for fairer treatment. She noted that anyone facing similar conditions would take the same stance.

Münkel clarified that the action was not about pay increases. Instead, the focus was on enforcing the TVN agreement consistently nationwide. A key demand was equalising vacation days and shift allowances between western and eastern federal states. He also pointed out that the strike had placed extra strain on staff, forcing longer shifts and heavier workloads.

The walkout ended after a single day, but tensions remain before Tuesday’s talks. Employees are seeking uniform working conditions across all regions. The outcome of the upcoming negotiations will determine whether further industrial action takes place.
