Merz and Klingbeil dine together amid coalition tensions in Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) met with his deputy, Lars Klingbeil (SPD), in the latter’s Lower Saxony constituency on Wednesday. The visit comes after reports of heated exchanges between the two leaders during a recent coalition committee meeting. The meeting took place in Walsrode, within the Heidekreis district, where Merz and Klingbeil shared dinner. According to officials, their discussions focused on 'the state of the coalition and the next reform steps'. The visit was framed as an effort to display unity, following claims that the two had 'shouted at each other' in a prior meeting.

Chancellor Merz dismissed the reports of shouting outright. Klingbeil, however, indirectly acknowledged the tension by remarking, 'It’s also fine to discuss things with passion'. Earlier on Wednesday, Klingbeil had downplayed the significance of such disagreements during a federal press conference.

The Federal Press Office later released photos and videos of the meeting across all channels on Wednesday evening. The visuals aimed to present a picture of cooperation between the coalition partners.

On Thursday, Klingbeil is set to accompany Merz on a visit to Bundeswehr troops at the training grounds in Munster. The joint appearance will mark another public display of collaboration between the two leaders. The visit to Klingbeil’s constituency follows a period of visible strain within the coalition. While the dinner and planned troop visit signal an attempt to project solidarity, the differing responses to the earlier reports of shouting highlight ongoing tensions. Both leaders will continue working together in the coming days, with further public engagements scheduled.
