Morena prepares for leadership shake-up as Alcalde Luján steps down
Mexico's ruling Morena party has called for an extraordinary session of its National Council on May 3, where members are expected to convene an Extraordinary National Congress to elect a new leadership for the National Executive Committee (CEN).
The departure of Luisa María Alcalde Luján from her role as CEN president is set to be formalized this week, following the conclusion of Esthela Damián Peralta's term as legal advisor to the presidency—a position Alcalde Luján will assume after an invitation from President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
At the National Council meeting, newly appointed members—including potential candidates for the CEN presidency, such as current Welfare Secretary Ariadna Montiel—are expected to take office. If confirmed, Montiel could then face a vote before the National Congress.

Meanwhile, during a visit to Hidalgo, Ariadna Montiel declined to comment on any interest in leading Morena after Alcalde's exit.
"We will not be making any statements—thank you," she said.
