New Krenz documentary sparks outrage over sanitized GDR history
A new documentary about former East German leader Egon Krenz has triggered fierce criticism after its premiere. Communist, a 123-minute cinematic essay, was shown at the Schwerin Film Art Festival before its planned nationwide release next year. Opponents claim the film distorts history and downplays the brutality of the GDR regime. The controversy centres on director Lutz Pehnert’s portrayal of Krenz, now 89, and his role in the East German state. Critics argue the film presents a sanitised version of the GDR, ignoring the suffering of political prisoners and those killed at the Berlin Wall. Historian Burkhard Bley accused Pehnert of suppressing key facts to paint a more favourable picture of the regime.
The project received €130,000 in public funding, including €60,000 from Minister Wolfram Weimer and €70,000 from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s film board. Katy Hoffmeister, a vocal opponent, questioned why taxpayer money was used to 'polish the legends of former SED officials'. She warned that the documentary’s narrative risks rewriting history. Producers have defended the film as an artistic essay rather than a journalistic investigation. Despite the backlash, *Communist* remains scheduled for a German cinema release on June 11, 2026.
The documentary’s premiere has reignited debates about how the GDR’s legacy is remembered. With public funding involved, calls for accountability over its historical accuracy are growing. The film’s release next year will likely keep the controversy in the spotlight.
