Pope Francis condemns 'throwaway culture' in powerful pro-life message
Pope Francis has called for greater solidarity with society’s most vulnerable, including the unborn, elderly, and terminally ill. His message, delivered from a hospital room on 5 March 2023, was shared with Italy’s Movement for Life during their 50th-anniversary celebrations at the Vatican three days later. The pope’s written address criticised the spread of a ‘throwaway culture’ that discards human life when it becomes inconvenient. He stressed that a truly just society cannot be built by removing those deemed unwanted, whether unborn children, the elderly, or the incurably sick.
Pope Francis also highlighted the need to support women facing pressure to abort their children. He urged compassion and practical help instead of judgement, framing the defence of unborn life as part of a broader commitment to the marginalised. On 8 March, thousands gathered at the Vatican to mark the Movement for Life’s half-century of work. Cardinal Pietro Parolin led a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, where he read the pope’s message aloud. The organisation, which runs 350 support centres, a 24-hour helpline, and shelters for pregnant women, has also helped set up 64 ‘baby hatches’ in public hospitals across Italy. The pope praised the movement’s focus on human dignity, particularly for the weakest. He commended their efforts to foster a ‘culture of life’ through tangible acts of love and solidarity rather than empty rhetoric.
The Movement for Life’s anniversary events drew widespread attention to its long-standing mission. With the pope’s endorsement, the group’s network of services—from crisis pregnancy support to safe surrender options—remains a key resource for vulnerable women and families. The call to reject a throwaway culture now extends beyond Italy, reinforcing the movement’s global influence.
