Portuguese councilwoman's son confesses to her murder ahead of trial
A councilwoman from Vagos was found dead in her home last October after being shot. Her son, now under preventive custody, confessed to the murder and will stand trial this week. The case has moved swiftly through the legal system, with proceedings set for Wednesday morning.
Susana Gravato, a local councilwoman, was discovered dead at her residence in Gafanha da Vagueira on October 21, 2025. Her husband found the body and immediately contacted emergency services. Despite resuscitation attempts, doctors declared her dead at the scene.
Within 24 hours, the Judicial Police arrested Gravato's son on suspicion of murder. During questioning, the teenager admitted to shooting his mother with a firearm. He has remained in a closed-regime juvenile detention centre ever since. The trial will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Family and Juvenile Court of Aveiro. A collegiate court—comprising one professional judge and two lay judges—will oversee the case under educational guardianship proceedings for qualified homicide. Most of the trial will take place behind closed doors, with only the verdict reading open to the public.
The accused minor remains in custody while awaiting the court's decision. The trial's outcome will determine his legal future under juvenile justice procedures. No further public details about the case have been released since the arrest.
