President pushes European autonomy ahead of Washington visit

The president clearly wants the focus on concrete choices—and at this forum, he championed technological and energy autonomy alongside reforms within the European Union.

"Europe's strategic autonomy is not just a 'slogan'; it is a necessity. It is the ability to define our own interests, safeguard them with our own tools, and avoid relying solely on decisions made in other capitals—no matter how allied those capitals may be," he argued.

In practical terms, he heads to Washington with a clear priority: defending European values.

His words carry added weight at a time when the United States is using the Lajes Air Base. If a review of the agreement is on the table, the real test will come in the months ahead.

The La Toja Forum is organized by the Fundación La Toja, chaired by Amancio López Seijas, a Galician entrepreneur in the hospitality sector.
