Roblox faces 145 lawsuits over child safety failures and grooming risks
Roblox, a gaming platform designed for children as young as five, is now facing over 145 lawsuits over child safety concerns. The allegations claim the company failed to protect young users from predatory behaviour and exploitation. In response, Roblox has announced new safety measures, including age-based restrictions for accounts held by users aged 5 to 15, set to launch in June. The lawsuits accuse Roblox of not doing enough to prevent organised grooming and exploitation on its platform. Until 2024, adults could reportedly send direct messages to children of any age. Predators allegedly used in-game currency, known as Robux, to build trust with minors before moving conversations to less-monitored platforms like Discord.
Children were also able to create accounts without parental consent, raising further concerns. The legal action reflects a broader shift, with courts increasingly siding with plaintiffs in cases involving online child safety. Roblox has now begun rolling out stricter controls, aiming to limit interactions based on age. These changes come as pressure mounts on tech companies to better safeguard young users.
The new restrictions will take effect in June, but experts warn that no platform can guarantee complete safety for unsupervised children. Parents are being urged to stay actively involved in monitoring their children’s online activities. The outcome of these lawsuits could set important precedents for how gaming platforms handle child protection in the future.
