Ronda Rousey's 17-Second Knockout Ends MMA Career in Netflix's Historic Fight
Netflix hosted its first-ever MMA event with a historic fight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano. The two pioneers of women’s MMA faced off in the Octagon for the first time, ending in a swift victory for Rousey. Both fighters had been absent from competition for years, making the bout a rare return to the sport. The match lasted just 17 seconds before Rousey secured a win by armbar. At 39, she had not fought since 2016, while Carano, 44, last competed in 2009. Despite the quick defeat, Carano described the experience as 'a victory' simply for stepping back into the ring.
Rousey announced this would be her final fight, stating she now plans to focus on 'having more fucking babies.' The event marked a milestone for Netflix, which aired its first live MMA competition. Beyond the Octagon, both fighters have made headlines for their political views. Rousey distanced herself from Donald Trump in 2015 and later endorsed Bernie Sanders. Carano, however, remains a vocal Trump supporter and spoke at a Las Vegas rally for him in October 2024. Controversies have also followed both women. In 2013, Rousey shared a conspiracy theory about the Sandy Hook shooting, which she apologised for in 2024. Carano, meanwhile, was fired from *The Mandalorian* by Disney after posting an image comparing the 1941 Lviv pogroms to modern American conservatives.
The fight closed a chapter for Rousey, who retires with a 13-2 record. Carano, despite the loss, returned to MMA after a 15-year absence. Their clash remains a landmark moment for women’s combat sports and Netflix’s expansion into live fight coverage.
