Rostock's Warning Day 2026: Sirens, Safety Drills, and Emergency Prep
What should I do when the sirens sound?
In major emergencies or disasters, a functioning warning system is essential—and can even save lives. The devastating events of recent years, such as the flooding in the Ahr Valley or the crisis in Ukraine, have starkly demonstrated how crucial rapid and reliable public alerts are. To raise awareness of this issue, the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock has launched Rostock Warning Day. On Saturday, April 4, 2026, the city's sirens will wail again in a test alert.
Why is Rostock Warning Day important?
In an emergency, every second counts. Since 2021, Rostock has conducted siren tests twice a year—not only to check their technical functionality but also to thoroughly rehearse the entire warning process. The goal is to ensure the public is both aware and informed so they can respond correctly in a crisis. Alongside the siren test, an alert will be issued via Germany's Modular Warning System (MoWaS), delivering critical information directly to residents' mobile devices and through various media channels.
How can the public prepare?
An effective warning system only works if people know how to react in an emergency. For this reason, the city of Rostock provides extensive resources on its website, *www.rostock.de/warning*, including:
- Leaflets on siren response protocols – What to do when the sirens sound?
- Audio files of all siren signals – Hear what a warning sounds like!
- Detailed information on Rostock's warning systems – What alert channels are available?
Additional guidance on personal preparedness and various emergency scenarios is available at *www.rostock.de/civil-protection*.
On April 4, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Fire Protection, Emergency Services, and Disaster Management Office will demonstrate an emergency meeting point near Kröpeliner Tor, explaining its setup and function. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions directly about public warnings and personal safety measures.
