Russian businessman convicted after teen dies from gas poisoning

A businessman in Nakhodka has been convicted over the death of a teenager from household gas poisoning. The case, prosecuted in Primorsky Krai, resulted in a guilty verdict after an earlier acquittal was overturned on appeal.

The defendant received a suspended sentence and must pay compensation to the victim's family for both moral and material harm.

In February 2025, the entrepreneur sold three canisters of liquefied gas to a minor in Nakhodka. The teenager later inhaled the gas, suffering acute butane poisoning that proved fatal.

The businessman was first acquitted in the same criminal case. However, the Primorsky Krai Prosecutor's Office challenged the ruling, leading to a retrial. This time, the court found him guilty of causing death by negligence under Article 109, Part 1, of the Russian Criminal Code. The defendant, operating as a sole trader, had violated regulations governing gas sales. As a result, the court imposed one year and six months of restricted freedom. It also upheld the victim's mother's civil claim, ordering compensation for the damages caused by her child's death.

The ruling marks the end of a legal process that began with an acquittal before prosecutors secured a conviction. The businessman will serve a non-custodial sentence while providing financial restitution to the victim's family. No further public details on similar cases in recent years have been reported.
