Salzgitter daycare renovation costs soar by €650,000 beyond original budget

The renovation of a daycare centre in Salzgitter-Ringelheim now faces a significant budget increase. Originally set at €945,000, the project’s total cost has risen to €1,592,645—nearly €650,000 more than planned. City officials attribute the overrun to a mix of economic pressures and construction adjustments. When the project began, the estimated cost stood at €945,000. By summer 2024, expenses had already climbed to €1,515,645, reflecting a €570,645 rise. An additional €77,000 was later added due to minor but expected deviations in construction work.

Several factors pushed costs higher. The COVID-19 pandemic drove up material and labour prices, while Germany’s Building Energy Act (GEG) introduced further financial strain. Broader economic challenges also played a role, inflating expenses beyond initial projections. The city administration confirmed that ongoing construction activities contributed an extra €647,645. Changes to the project’s scope and rising personnel costs added to the financial burden. Despite this, officials insist no further overruns are anticipated. To cover the shortfall, the city plans to use remaining budget reserves. Authorities have assured that adjusting the funds will ensure the renovation’s completion without additional financial risks.

The daycare centre’s renovation now stands at €1,592,645, a sharp increase from the original budget. With financing secured through existing reserves, the city expects the project to proceed as planned. No further cost rises are foreseen at this stage.
