SAP to acquire Dremio, supercharging its Business Data Cloud with open-source tech

SAP has announced plans to acquire Dremio, a leading data platform provider. The deal aims to boost SAP’s Business Data Cloud by integrating open-source technology. Both companies expect the acquisition to close in late 2026, pending regulatory approvals.

SAP, a global leader in enterprise software and AI, will expand its data capabilities with Dremio’s open platform. Dremio specialises in real-time analytics and AI workloads across different systems. Its technology allows instant, secure access to enterprise data for both employees and AI tools.

Dremio has played a key role in open-source projects like Apache Iceberg, Apache Polaris, and Apache Arrow. The company’s platform, known as the Agentic Lakehouse, is built on the open Iceberg standard. This design supports AI agents and ensures flexibility in data management. The acquisition will bring a universal, open data catalogue to SAP’s Business Data Cloud. Based on Apache Polaris and the Iceberg REST Catalog API, it will simplify integration between SAP and non-SAP data sources. SAP plans to transform its Business Data Cloud into an Iceberg-native enterprise lakehouse, scaling agentic AI for large businesses.

Once finalised, the deal will enhance SAP’s ability to manage and analyse data across platforms. The combined technology will support real-time AI and analytics for enterprises. Completion of the acquisition remains subject to regulatory reviews, with a target date in the third quarter of 2026.
