Scandal Shadows NJ’s 40th District as GOP Holds Strong Despite Abuse Claims
In the 40th district of New Jersey, a heated election is taking place. Republican candidate Ron Arnau's campaign has been rocked by allegations of domestic abuse, with his opponents calling for proof of his innocence. Despite this, the Republican party maintains a strong grip on the district, which has never elected a Democrat since 1973.
The 40th district, which overwhelmingly supported Trump in 2024 and Ciattarelli in 2021, is currently represented by Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips and Assemblyman Al Barlas, both Republicans who won re-election in 2021 and are leading their Democratic challengers in the latest polls. DePhillips, the Republican conference leader, is the chamber's No. 3 Republican, while Barlas has led the state Republican party on election issues.
Arnau, who is running for office, faced serious allegations from a former partner. Mikie Sherrill, the district's three Democratic county chairs, demanded that Arnau produce proof of his innocence or end his campaign. Despite the scandal, Arnau's campaign continued, albeit at a reduced scale. The Republican party has vastly outspent the Democratic party in this race.
As of 1 a.m., DePhillips and Barlas maintain a lead over their Democratic challengers. Despite the allegations against Arnau, the Republican party continues to dominate the 40th district. The identity of the Democratic challenger remains unclear, as no explicit name was found in the search results.
