Slovak PM Robert Fico faces treason probe after historic citizen complaint
Slovak police have opened an investigation into Prime Minister Robert Fico over allegations of treason and other serious crimes. The probe follows a criminal complaint filed by opposition leader Branislav Gröhling, who claims Fico's actions may have broken the law. Over 13,000 citizens co-signed the complaint, marking it as the largest in the country's history. The complaint, submitted by Branislav Gröhling of the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, accuses Fico of multiple offences. These include abuse of power, inhumane treatment, mishandling foreign assets, and involvement in a terrorist act. One key issue is Fico's decision to stop emergency power supplies to Ukraine, which critics argue was politically motivated.
The case was first sent to the regional prosecutor's office before being passed to the police for a full investigation. Gröhling stated he believes Fico is suspected of committing grave criminal acts. Authorities have confirmed the investigation is active and not being ignored. No direct impact on Ukraine's energy situation has been reported from Slovakia's cutoff. The emergency supplies were only meant for technical grid support, not for household use. Despite ongoing Russian attacks causing blackouts in Ukraine, no evidence links these outages to the Slovak decision.
The investigation into Fico remains underway, with both police and prosecutors involved. The complaint's massive public backing highlights widespread concern over the prime minister's policies. For now, Ukraine's energy crisis continues, but the Slovak power halt has not worsened its day-to-day electricity shortages.
