South Korean president makes surprise visit to Namdaemun Market amid economic struggles
President Lee Jae Myung and first lady Kim Hea Kyung made an unannounced visit to Namdaemun Market in Seoul on Friday. The trip aimed to assess the struggles of small merchants and show support for those facing economic difficulties. The presidential couple arrived without warning after attending a Parents' Day event nearby. They spent time walking through the market, engaging with shoppers and posing for photos with citizens, including children.
During their visit, they bought dumplings and eyeglass chains from local vendors. They also stopped for lunch, enjoying *jokbal*, a traditional Korean dish made with pork feet. Namdaemun Market, known as Korea’s largest traditional market, is a favourite spot for foreign tourists. Merchants at the market have recently called for government help to attract more international visitors and boost sales.
The visit highlighted the challenges faced by small business owners in the current economy. By interacting directly with merchants and shoppers, the president and first lady observed firsthand how economic pressures are affecting daily life in the market.
