SPD and Greens unite behind Neumann in Solingen’s mayoral runoff
In a show of political unity, the SPD and Greens in Solingen have joined forces to support SPD's candidate Josef Neumann in the mayoral runoff election on September 28. The collaboration, outlined in a joint support paper, focuses on key green issues that both parties deem crucial for the city's future.
The Green Party's candidate for mayor, Annemarie Scheerer, will not be in the runoff. Instead, the Greens have thrown their weight behind Neumann, with 82% of Green party members voting in favor of the decision. The joint support paper highlights several key green issues, including sustainable urban development, investment in education, affordable housing, the Veloroute 2 project, preservation of the green belt, and targeted economic promotion.
Green's top candidate Maja Wehrmann reaffirmed their commitment to these issues, stating they continue to fight for quality education, a sustainable Solingen, affordable housing, and a strong democratic culture. Thilo Schnor, another top Green candidate, emphasized the importance of securing cultural institutions such as the Theater and Concert Hall and the Center for Persecuted Arts. He also noted that the future mayor's task is to unite politics and society, given the challenging majority dynamics and heated political debate. The Greens chose Neumann, believing these times call for an experienced politician. Schnor highlighted that the election is both a matter of content and personality.
With the SPD and Greens united behind Neumann, the runoff election on September 28 is set to be a significant moment for Solingen. The joint support paper serves as a roadmap for the city's future, focusing on green issues that both parties agree are crucial for Solingen's prosperity.
