Spree-Neiße elects new district administrator after 16 years of leadership change

Spree-Neiße has a new district administrator after a closely watched election. Martin Heusler, a CDU candidate, will take over the role on May 11. His appointment follows 16 years of leadership under Harald Altekrüger, who stepped down after a long tenure. Harald Altekrüger led the district since 2008, focusing on job creation and economic growth. He also supported Sorbian-Wendish cultural traditions during his time in office. Brandenburg’s Minister-President, Dietmar Woidke (SPD), praised Altekrüger for his stability and dedication to structural change in the region.

The election process faced a legal challenge from the AfD, which contested the runoff vote. However, the district council rejected the complaint, allowing the transition to proceed. At a farewell event, Woidke highlighted Altekrüger’s contributions to the local economy and his steady leadership through difficult periods. Martin Heusler’s victory marks the beginning of a new chapter for Spree-Neiße. His official start date is set for mid-May, following the handover from his predecessor.

The district now prepares for a change in leadership after Altekrüger’s extended service. Heusler will take charge amid ongoing economic and cultural priorities. The legal dispute over the vote has been resolved, clearing the way for the new administration.
