Man feeds raw pork to lions at Dortmund Zoo, sparking health concerns
A 29-year-old man from Dortmund was caught feeding raw pork to lions at Dortmund Zoo on Tuesday morning. Staff spotted the unusual act at 11:15 a.m. and alerted authorities after the visitor refused to share his identity. Zoo employees saw the man throwing meat into the lion enclosure. When questioned, he admitted to bringing the food himself but would not give his name. Police were called and found him near the big cat area with a backpack containing leftover pork goulash.
The man later told officers he often visited the zoo and fed the lions because they were making loud noises. Zoo staff quickly secured the remaining pork, which a veterinarian froze for further testing. While feeding the animals is not illegal, raw pork poses serious health risks to all feline species. The zoo may take civil action if the lions become ill as a result.
The incident has raised concerns about the lions’ health. Raw pork can cause severe illness in big cats, and the zoo is monitoring the animals closely. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the man will face charges.
