German police halt five lorries in crackdown on unsafe trucking violations

Police inspections at two German rest areas uncovered serious violations by truck drivers. Officers halted five lorries due to technical faults, unsafe loads, or forged documents. The checks took place at Fuchsgrund and Gütersloh Nord with support from multiple agencies. At the Fuchsgrund rest area, a Lithuanian driver was stopped after inspectors found severe rust corrosion on his trailer’s axle. The damage was so extensive that his container had to be moved to another vehicle. He also carried a fake Ukrainian driver’s licence, leading to a €600 security deposit for criminal proceedings.

At Gütersloh Nord, a Polish driver faced a ban for transporting hazardous materials in improperly secured containers. He paid a €2,000 deposit for administrative offences, while four loaders involved now face their own proceedings.

Other violations included multiple cases of poorly secured cargo and breaches of driving time rules. Many drivers had failed to follow mandatory rest periods, with social regulation violations among the most common issues.

In total, five drivers were temporarily prohibited from continuing their journeys. The bans followed discoveries of either technical defects or unsafe load securing during the inspections. The operations resulted in fines, security deposits, and journey prohibitions for several drivers. Authorities also launched administrative proceedings against individuals responsible for loading violations. Further investigations into the forged licence case remain ongoing.
