Fake Police Scam: Trial Opens at Münster Regional Court
Trial begins for man accused of targeting elderly in €162,000 fraud scheme
Prosecutors in Münster have accused a 26-year-old man of organized fraud in six cases, with total damages amounting to €162,000.
Using an especially insidious scheme, the gang tricked multiple elderly victims into handing over cash and jewelry—ostensibly for their own protection. Callers claimed the seniors' addresses were on a list targeted by burglars and urged them to secure their money and valuables before it was too late. A police officer, they said, would come by to collect everything for safekeeping.
The catch? The "officer" was no policeman but a member of the gang, who then delivered the victims' cash and jewelry to the accused in Bielefeld.
According to the indictment, his role was to rent apartments in Turkey, from which other suspects made the fraudulent calls, and to receive the stolen goods through a contact.
In the Münster region, a senior woman in Beckum and a senior man in Sendenhorst fell victim to the scam. Investigators in East Westphalia uncovered additional cases. In court, the defendant appeared cooperative, signaling through his lawyer that he intended to make a statement. His testimony, along with witness accounts, will be heard in one of the four scheduled hearings in March—likely followed by a verdict. If convicted, he faces a multi-year prison sentence.
