Trump urges Senate GOP to kill filibuster—but Republicans refuse again
Former President Donald Trump has called on Senate Republicans to scrap the filibuster rule during a recent breakfast gathering at the White House. However, Republican leaders in the Senate have reaffirmed their stance against eliminating the filibuster.
Trump, in his latest push to change the Senate's rules, suggested that Republicans should do away with the filibuster to facilitate government reopening and pass legislation on party lines. However, he also expressed understanding if his party colleagues chose not to proceed with the elimination.
In November 2025, Republican senators in the US Senate once again rejected the proposal to abolish the filibuster rule, despite Trump's repeated criticism and calls for its removal.
Despite Trump's urging, Senate Republicans maintain their position against eliminating the filibuster. The former president's proposal to reopen the government on party lines, contingent on the filibuster's removal, has not gained traction among his party's leadership in the Senate.
