UK's Fuel Finder scheme now enforces real-time petrol price transparency
A new scheme to help drivers find the cheapest fuel has now come into full force. From 1 May 2023, petrol stations failing to update their prices on time face fines. The move follows years of campaigning over unfair fuel costs across the UK. The Fuel Finder scheme was first announced in the Autumn Budget by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. It aims to save households around £40 a year by letting drivers check live pricing data online or via sat-nav systems. The system was developed after a major investigation revealed drivers were often overcharged at the pumps.
The Competition and Markets Authority had pushed for the scheme in 2023. By 2 February 2023, all UK petrol stations were legally required to report price changes within 30 minutes. Now, enforcement has begun, meaning stations that fail to comply could be penalised. Edmund King, President of the AA, called the enforcement a 'momentous' day for fair and transparent fuel pricing. The scheme is designed to give drivers real-time information, helping them avoid overpriced forecourts.
The Fuel Finder scheme is now active, with penalties in place for non-compliance. Drivers can access up-to-date pricing to make informed choices at the pump. The government expects the system to cut costs for millions of motorists each year.
