Vienna trial exposes brutal Danube Island murder with DNA and witness accounts
Two men are standing trial in Vienna for the alleged brutal murder of a third man on Danube Island. The victim’s body was discovered near the Nordbrücke bridge on August 19, 2025, after he was beaten and drowned in the New Danube. The prosecution claims the victim suffered severe injuries before his death. Forensic reports show at least 14 lacerations on his head, a split upper lip, and a fractured nasal bone. DNA evidence from the scene links both defendants to the crime, with traces of their blood and the victim’s found at the location.
The case heavily relies on the testimony of the first defendant’s then-girlfriend, who witnessed the assault. However, she has a severe alcohol dependency and a legal guardian, though prosecutors still consider her credible. Neither defendant has confessed—the first remains uncooperative, while the second admits to hitting the victim but denies any role in the drowning. The trial has faced delays, with the latest adjournment on July 22 due to the key witness’s unexplained absence.
The proceedings continue as investigators piece together the events leading to the victim’s death. The DNA evidence and witness accounts remain central to the prosecution’s argument, though the trial’s progress depends on the availability of key testimony.
