Vienna's iconic VBW theatres face crisis after €5 million funding cut

The Vereinigten Bühnen Wien (VBW) is facing financial strain after the City of Vienna slashed its subsidies by €5 million. The cut reduces funding to €51 million in 2026, forcing the organisation to implement strict cost-saving measures. Managing director Franz Patay has warned that without further support, the theatre group's future remains uncertain. VBW had previously received subsidies of up to €56 million in recent years. However, the latest reduction has triggered a series of cuts, including the closure of the Kammeroper this summer. This move alone will save €3 million annually.

Patay has already reduced operating expenses by €2 million, cutting external staff and eliminating night porter roles. Personnel costs have also dropped by €2 million after around 20 employees left and some vacancies were left unfilled. Despite these measures, the organisation still faces rising operational costs and lingering financial pressure from the pandemic. Artistic changes have followed, with director Stefan Herheim scaling back new opera productions. Meanwhile, Christian Struppeck has extended the runs of existing musicals to maximise revenue. A slight boost in attendance and performances is expected to bring in an extra €2 million in 2023, exceeding budget projections. Patay's contract as managing director ends in October 2023, and no replacement has been advertised yet. He remains hopeful that the €51 million subsidy will be maintained beyond 2026.

The €5 million funding cut has forced VBW to reduce staff, close venues, and restructure operations. While cost-saving efforts and higher attendance may ease some pressure, the organisation's long-term stability depends on future subsidy decisions. The city's next funding announcement will determine whether further cuts or adjustments are needed.
