Viet Nam and Sri Lanka pledge deeper ties in historic Colombo talks
Viet Nam and Sri Lanka have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties during a high-level meeting in Colombo. On Friday, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) Central Committee and President Tô Lâm held talks with Speaker of Sri Lanka’s Parliament Jagath Wickramaratne. The discussions focused on deepening cooperation and elevating bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership. The meeting took place as part of Lâm’s state visit to Sri Lanka, where he expressed pleasure at returning to the country. He noted its steady and sustainable development since his last visit.
Lâm and Wickramaratne agreed to expand collaboration across all sectors. They also defined key areas for future cooperation, including institutional reforms and the development of digital economies. The Vietnamese leader proposed sharing experiences in legal frameworks to support digital growth.
During the talks, Lâm called for preferential policies to encourage Vietnamese businesses to invest in Sri Lanka. He also pushed for the establishment of direct air routes between the two nations. Additionally, he hoped for stronger coordination between the two legislatures, leading to a formal cooperation agreement.
Wickramaratne welcomed Lâm’s proposals and thanked Vietnamese leaders for their efforts in strengthening bilateral relations. He echoed the hope to deepen the Comprehensive Partnership and boost cooperation in multiple fields. The meeting highlighted the long-standing friendship between Viet Nam and Sri Lanka. Both sides pledged to support each other in economic, legal, and infrastructural development. The discussions set a clear path for closer collaboration in the coming years.
