Despite Decline: Many Attacks on Politicians in Brandenburg - Violent attacks on Brandenburg politicians surge ahead of elections
Politicians continue to be frequent targets of attacks, with alarmingly high figures in recent years—and 2025 has seen little improvement.
Despite a slight decline, the number of assaults on politicians in Brandenburg remains at a troubling level. Last year, authorities recorded 431 criminal offenses against officeholders, elected representatives, party offices, and party members, according to a response from the Interior Ministry to a parliamentary inquiry by the SPD state faction. The figures are based on police crime statistics.
In 2024, there were 489 such incidents—significantly higher than in previous years. Ministry data shows that in 2023, police documented 256 offenses against politicians, compared to 182 in 2022 and just 45 in 2021.
Why the sharp rise since 2024? That year, Brandenburg held state and local elections, and police statistics indicate that some of the recorded cases were linked to the campaigns. A similar pattern emerged in 2025, as federal elections took place early in the year, with several offenses reportedly connected to the vote.
