Zelenskyy pushes EU for 2025 Ukraine membership deadline amid Russia tensions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is urging the European Union to set a fixed date for his country’s membership. He sees this as a key security guarantee in future peace talks with Russia. But EU leaders have so far avoided committing to a firm timeline. Zelenskyy has called for the EU to establish a concrete accession date in 2025. His push comes amid concerns that Russia could block Ukraine’s path to membership if no binding schedule exists. The president believes a clear timeline would strengthen Ukraine’s position in negotiations.
Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has made it clear that member states are not yet prepared to agree on a set date. The bloc insists Ukraine must first meet all membership criteria before any timeline can be discussed.
Ukraine is working intensively to fulfil the EU’s demanding requirements. Despite rapid reforms, the country still faces significant hurdles before full integration becomes possible. The EU’s reluctance to set a deadline leaves Ukraine in a difficult position. Without a binding schedule, Zelenskyy warns that Russia could exploit the uncertainty to undermine Kyiv’s European ambitions. For now, the focus remains on reforms rather than a fixed accession date.
