87-year-old driver's erratic highway behavior sparks police intervention
An 87-year-old driver from Ganderkesee put several road users at risk on Saturday. The incident unfolded on Federal Highway 212 in Berne, where the man was seen driving erratically towards Elsfleth just after midday. Authorities later confirmed he was unfit to operate a vehicle safely. The elderly motorist was spotted weaving at low speed along the highway. His unstable driving prompted a witness to follow him while alerting police. Officers eventually intercepted the man near Hammelwarder Straße in Brake.
During the stop, the driver showed clear signs of physical and cognitive impairment. Tests confirmed he was unable to drive safely. Before his arrest, he had sideswiped the mirror of an oncoming vehicle in a 70 km/h zone but failed to stop. The other driver has not yet come forward, and police are still searching for the second car involved.
A court immediately ordered the confiscation of the 87-year-old’s driver’s licence. Investigations into the incident are ongoing. Police have urged anyone with information to contact them at +49 4401 9350. The driver’s licence remains suspended, and authorities continue to search for the unidentified vehicle involved in the collision.
