Abkhazia's Dioscuria electric train expands routes after record passenger growth
Abkhazia’s Dioscuria electric train has seen strong passenger numbers since its launch in May 2025. Over 170,000 travellers have used the service, with more than 13,000 boarding in the first three months of 2026 alone. Now, plans are underway to expand the route further across the region. The Dioscuria runs daily, covering its full journey in around three and a half hours. A key feature of the service is its onboard document checks, allowing passengers to skip border control queues.
Abkhazian leader Badra Gunba has announced the next phase of expansion. The first extension will stretch from Sirius to Sukhumi Airport, a move described as both important and convenient for travellers. Following this, the route will reach Ochamchira in Abkhazia’s eastern region. Gunba’s plans also focus on boosting tourism and improving infrastructure in Ochamchira. The expansion aims to make travel smoother while supporting local development.
The Dioscuria has already become a popular transport option, carrying over 170,000 passengers since 2025. With new extensions to Sukhumi Airport and Ochamchira, the service is set to grow further. The changes will also help streamline travel and support regional tourism projects.
