Firefighters rescue duck family stranded on a German rooftop terrace
A mother duck and her ducklings caused an unusual rescue operation in Lehrte’s town centre on Monday morning. Firefighters were called after the family was spotted stranded on a rooftop terrace along Poststraße, refusing to come down on their own. The duck family was first noticed on the terrace, where they appeared unable—or unwilling—to leave. Concerned residents alerted authorities, leading to a joint response from firefighters and animal rescuers.
Fire crews from Lehrte and Röddensen arrived with two vehicles and four personnel. A staff member from Burgdorf’s animal shelter also joined the effort. The team attempted to catch the ducklings using a net, aiming to place them safely in a transport box. The mother duck, however, proved difficult to contain. She repeatedly evaded capture, slipping away each time the rescuers got close. Eventually, the ducklings were brought down to ground level. Once they reached the street, the mother followed, reuniting with her family. With the ducks safely gathered, firefighters escorted them to a new home in Lehrte’s Stadtpark.
The operation involved multiple teams and took time due to the mother’s evasive behaviour. All ducks were safely relocated by mid-morning. No injuries were reported during the rescue.
