German Daycare Group Faces Backlash Over Sexual Education for Young Children
A 2017 brochure by the Falken federal association has come under scrutiny for recommending sexual games to young children. The materials included activities like drawing and discussing sex toys. Questions have now arisen about whether these practices align with child protection standards in daycare settings.
The Falken, a socialist-affiliated group, operates daycare centres across Germany and has received millions in public funding over the past decade. The Falken organisation openly states that its educational approach aims to shape a socialist society. Sexuality is explicitly included in its teaching methods. Two of its daycare centres in Bielefeld, Nestfalken and Neuland Falken, recently removed controversial materials from their websites following media inquiries.
The Family Ministry provided €2,700 in funding for the 2017 brochure. After questions were raised, the ministry requested an official statement from the Falken. However, it did not directly address whether the group’s sex education concepts meet child protection requirements.
North Rhine-Westphalia’s Ministry for Children, Family, Refugees, and Integration has not expressed concerns about early sexualisation in Falken daycare centres. The ministry views sex education as part of early childhood learning, focusing on topics like inappropriate touching and personal boundaries. Daycare facilities are required to have policies that protect children from violence and uphold their rights.
The state youth welfare office also supports sex education as a key part of preventive child protection. Despite this, the Falken’s specific methods have not faced formal scrutiny from regional authorities. The Falken has received nearly €12 million in federal funding over the last ten years. While the group’s materials have been removed from public view, no official review of its educational practices has been announced. The ministry continues to treat sex education as a standard component of early childhood development.
