Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Pushes for Early Presidential Election in February

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, led by Shafiqur Rahman, has outlined its stance for the upcoming presidential election. The party seeks an early poll in February and proposes a proportional representation system. Rahman, on a tour to Sylhet, has also revealed plans for an electoral understanding involving various parties.

Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed its desire to hold the election in February to prevent potential chaos from a delay. The party's amir, Shafiqur Rahman, has ruled out forming an electoral alliance, instead pursuing an electoral understanding. This understanding, Rahman stated, will include not only Islamic parties but also patriotic and committed political parties.

Rahman believes that a referendum on the July Charter should be held first to provide a legal basis for it. He proposes that the election be held under a proportional representation system. In preparation for this, Rahman is likely to involve the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other Islamist parties in an election agreement. Jamaat-e-Islami has clarified its stance, suggesting that the Awami League does not want the election.
