Bangladesh Parliament backs IPU’s Gaza ceasefire call and Palestinian rights
The Parliament of Bangladesh, a key player in the country's democratic process, has been actively engaged in international parliamentary dialogue. It is a member of several global organisations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which promotes peace, democracy, and sustainable development worldwide.
The IPU, at its 150th Assembly, adopted a resolution urging parliaments to support humanitarian organisations operating in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The resolution also reaffirmed the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and condemned human rights violations by Israel.
The parliamentary system, as practiced in Bangladesh, is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. It ensures that executive power rests with a cabinet composed of members of the legislature. The National Assembly of Bangladesh, within the IPU, represents the country in international parliamentary dialogue and cooperation, contributing to discussions on democracy, legislative processes, and other parliamentary matters.
The IPU's resolution underscores the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing global issues. It calls on parliaments to urge their governments to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and support a two-State solution. In a democratic society, the parliamentary system plays a significant role in ensuring the emancipation of the people through elected representatives, both nationally and internationally.
