Sharp Rise in Funeral Costs – Waldkirch Overhauls Cemetery Fees
Town council to vote on revised cemetery bylaw with new fees and options
On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the town council will vote on a revised cemetery bylaw amid rising costs and shifting burial practices. According to city officials, the proposed adjustments primarily reflect inflation over recent years.
Administrative and burial fees will see the most significant changes, with full cost recovery now intended. Grave plot charges will also increase, though not to full cost coverage—here, the city will continue subsidizing a portion of the expenses.
For example, the cost-recovery rate for using the chapel of rest will rise from 40% to 60%, leading to noticeable higher expenses for bereaved families. However, the proposal also includes fee reductions in other areas, such as the use of certain facilities, due to updated calculation methods.
The city is also expanding its offerings: urn lawn graves will now allow double occupancy, and personalized grave markers will be permitted. These changes respond to the growing preference for cremations.
Additionally, a dedicated burial section for so-called "angel babies" (stillborn or early-lost children) is planned. This communal memorial space will provide grieving parents with a place of remembrance at no extra cost.
Overall, the adjustments are expected to generate approximately €54,500 in additional annual revenue. The goal is to establish a more transparent and sustainable funding model for the city's cemeteries.
