Bavaria gears up for pivotal local elections on March 8, 2026

Bavaria is preparing for its general municipal and district elections on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Voters will choose mayors, district administrators, and local council members in polls open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Those unable to visit in person can still cast their ballots by post, though the deadline has been shortened this year. The elections follow Bavaria’s six-year cycle for local governance. Residents will decide on key positions, including mayors and district administrators. If no candidate wins an absolute majority in these races, a runoff will take place two weeks later.

The second round is scheduled for March 22, 2026. Only the two highest-scoring candidates from the first vote will compete. Officials have reminded voters to check their eligibility and submit postal ballots before the cut-off date.

The outcome will shape local leadership across Bavaria for the next six years. Runoff elections, if needed, will finalise the results by late March. Polling stations and postal options ensure all registered voters have a chance to participate.
