Promotion Association: Recognize Bavarian as a Minority Language - Bavarian Dialects Push for Official Recognition in Historic Petition Drive

The Bavarian Language and Dialects Association (FBSD) has gained significant support for its petition to recognize Bavarian, Franconian, and Alemannic-Swabian dialects as minority languages under the European Charter. The initiative, which aims to preserve and promote these regional languages, has received backing from the CSU and Free Voters in the Bavarian Landtag.

The FBSD submitted a list of approximately 22,000 signatures to representatives of the CSU and Free Voters governing coalition, demonstrating strong public support for the cause. The petition has since gained approval in the state parliament’s budget committee and has been referred to the German Bundestag for further consideration.

CSU state lawmakers, including Stephan Oetzinger and Sebastian Friesinger, have expressed their support for the initiative. Oetzinger believes dialects foster a sense of belonging and are vital to Bavaria’s everyday culture and identity. Friesinger suggests encouraging the use of dialects in kindergartens and schools. Free Voters state parliamentarian Josef Lausch argues that regional languages provide stability and familiarity in a changing world.

The search results indicate that while the CSU and Free Voters have shown 'unrestricted commitment' to the Bavarian dialects, the support from Bundestag parties remains unclear. The German Bundestag is currently considering the petition, and the FBSD welcomes a proposed roundtable on dialects by the Ministry of Homeland Affairs in collaboration with the State Association for Homeland Care.

The FBSD's initiative, focused on promoting Bavarian dialects in Bavaria, has gained significant traction. With the support of CSU and Free Voters, and the consideration of the German Bundestag, the future of these regional languages looks promising. The proposed roundtable and potential integration into educational systems further highlight the importance placed on preserving these dialects for future generations.
