Söder rejects higher fuel prices - Bavaria's CSU boosts commuter tax relief to ease rural fuel costs

CSU leader Markus Söder has firmly rejected calls for higher gasoline and diesel prices in Germany. "That will fail because of the CSU—we still need cars in rural areas," the Bavarian state premier declared in his speech at the traditional Ash Wednesday political rally in Passau.

The CSU, he said, is the "party of rural regions," which is why it pushed through an increase in the commuter tax allowance to offset rising fuel costs. "€350 per year for everyone who travels more than 50 kilometers," Söder stated.

With the expanded commuter allowance, the CSU has secured financial relief for drivers in rural areas. Party leader Söder delivered a clear message to anyone considering further price hikes.
