Braunschweig residents demand action over late-night MEC event noise
Residents in Braunschweig’s Weststadt and western Ringgebiet have raised concerns over persistent noise from events at the Millenniumhalle (MEC) on Madamenweg. Despite existing regulations, late-night disturbances—including loud departures and event-related traffic—have continued to disrupt local neighbourhoods. In 2023, the MEC installed sound limiters to ensure compliance with nighttime noise restrictions. However, complaints from Erftstraße, Rheinring, and Schüsslerstraße highlight ongoing issues, with reports of honking, shouting, and excessive noise lasting until 2 a.m.
The Green Party’s district council faction has now proposed long-term nighttime noise measurements around the MEC during music events. If necessary, further noise reduction steps would follow. Their motion also addresses traffic-related disturbances on Madamenweg, particularly late-night departures after events. Separately, the party’s proposal notes that the annual limit of ten special-use permits for parking on grassy areas at Raffteichbad has either been reached or will be by mid-year. This would prevent the area from being reserved for future equestrian events and concerts.
The city will now review the motion and resident complaints. If approved, noise monitoring and potential restrictions could be introduced to address the ongoing disturbances. The outcome may also affect event planning at Raffteichbad due to permit limitations.
