Emmendingen's underpass gets a youth-designed makeover this June
A pedestrian underpass in Emmendingen is set for a fresh look, thanks to a youth-led project. Students from the 8er-Rat, an eighth-grade council, have designed the renovation, which will begin in early June. The initiative forms part of the city’s wider push to involve young people in local decisions. The underpass at Neubronnstraße and Ramie-Straße will be transformed after months of planning. The redesign was shaped through workshops with the 8er-Rat, a group made up of eighth-grade pupils from every school in Emmendingen. Their ideas will now become reality.
Before the makeover, the underpass will close for cleaning from May 27 to May 30, 2026. During this time, the public will not be able to use the route. The project has also secured €20,000 from the 2026 city budget, earmarked for youth-led schemes in the 2025/26 participation year.
The renovation will give the underpass a new appearance, created entirely by local students. Work is scheduled to start shortly after the cleaning period ends. The project highlights how Emmendingen’s youth participation programme is turning young people’s ideas into visible changes in the city.
