Söder lambasts 'inner-German development aid' - Bavaria's Söder slams Germany's fiscal equalization as 'biggest swindle'
Every year, Bavaria is forced to pump record sums into Germany's fiscal equalization system to balance living standards across the federal states. For the CSU, this amounts to a "massive rip-off."
Once again, CSU leader Markus Söder has called for a fundamental overhaul of the system. Speaking at the traditional Politischer Aschermittwoch rally in Passau, Bavaria's minister-president declared that it was high time to end what he called "Germany's internal development aid."
In its current form, he argued, the fiscal equalization scheme is the "biggest swindle of all," allowing other states to afford luxuries that Bavaria—as the primary contributor—has to do without. "It's time for Germany to grow up," Söder emphasized.
