Benalmádena cracks down on illegal tourist rentals by removing lockboxes

Benalmadena has begun cracking down on unauthorised tourist rentals by removing lockboxes from public spaces. The devices, often fixed to railings, were used by holiday flat owners to provide guests with 24-hour key access. Residents in the area have long raised concerns about the impact of short-term lets on local neighbourhoods. Council workers recently took down several lockboxes after receiving complaints about their use in residential zones. Many of the devices were clearly marked with apartment numbers or coded labels, making them easy for tourists to spot. Some owners had installed them without permission, turning public street furniture into part of their rental operations.

Councillor Presi Aguilera confirmed that public spaces cannot be used for private commercial purposes. The move follows growing frustration among locals, with heated debates on social media and local forums about housing shortages and disruption caused by holiday lets. Benalmadena is one of the first areas on the Costa del Sol to take public action against these lockboxes. The council’s inspections and enforcement measures signal a wider push to regulate the booming tourist rental sector.

The removal of the lockboxes marks a step in Benalmadena’s efforts to control unauthorised tourist accommodation. Residents have welcomed the action, though tensions remain over the balance between tourism and local housing needs. Further enforcement measures are expected as the council continues its inspections.
