Berlin's births hit historic low in 2025 as decline spreads citywide

Berlin recorded its lowest number of births in 2025 since official tracking began. The city saw 33,240 newborns, a drop of around five percent from the previous year. Deaths also outnumbered births by nearly 4,600 cases, leaving the birth deficit unchanged from 2024. The decline in births affected every borough in Berlin. Reinickendorf, Pankow, and Mitte faced the steepest falls. Other areas followed a similar trend, though Marzahn-Hellersdorf experienced a less pronounced decrease.

Total births in 2025 reached just 33,240, marking a historic low. This figure continues a downward pattern, with deaths again exceeding new arrivals. The gap between the two remained steady at about 4,600 more deaths than births for the second year running.

The latest figures confirm Berlin’s ongoing birth deficit. With 33,240 births in 2025, the city’s population growth relies increasingly on other factors. Officials will likely monitor the trend as it persists across all districts.
