Berlin's cultural leaders urge new finance senator to prioritize arts funding
Berlin (dpa/bb) — The director of the Deutsches Theater has urged Berlin's Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU) to prioritize strengthening the city's cultural sector as he takes over the culture portfolio. As finance senator, Evers is fully aware of both the precarious financial situation facing Berlin's cultural institutions and the immense transformation efforts they have undertaken in recent months, said Intendant Iris Laufenberg in a statement.
"Now is the time to rebuild and fortify the cultural sector after a period of harsh and often last-minute cuts, ensuring its long-term stability," she emphasized. "The ongoing processes must continue through transparent dialogue and equal partnership with cultural institutions—Berlin's future as a cultural hub must not be put at risk."
Laufenberg expressed hope that merging the two portfolios would prove beneficial: "Culture in Berlin remains a vital economic driver. I trust that combining these responsibilities will be an asset for the city's cultural landscape."
Martin Woelffer, director of the Komödie am Kurfürstendamm, responded to inquiries by praising Evers' competence. "I have great confidence in Stefan Evers and look forward to collaborating during this pivotal phase for our theater," he said. "It is crucial for Berlin that culture has a strong advocate." The Komödie am Kurfürstendamm has relied on temporary venues for years while awaiting relocation to a new building on Kurfürstendamm.
