Zelensky accepts Kleist Prize in Munich on behalf of all Ukrainians - Ukraine Honored with Prestigious Ewald von Kleist Prize for Courage
The Ukrainian people have received the Ewald von Kleist Prize for their bravery and determination. The award, given by the Munich Security Conference, recognises their resistance against Russia’s invasion. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accepted it on their behalf during a ceremony in Munich.
The prize honours those who make exceptional contributions to peace and conflict resolution. Past winners include Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, Angela Merkel, and the United Nations. This year’s ceremony took place on Saturday evening, hosted by Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder.
The Ukrainian population was chosen for their unwavering fight for freedom, independence, and dignity. Their resilience in the face of Russia’s full-scale invasion earned them the distinction. The award also highlights their long-standing struggle against occupation forces. The Ewald von Kleist Prize was established in 2009, with Henry Kissinger as its first recipient. It is named after the conference’s founder, a publisher and anti-Nazi resistance fighter who launched the event in 1963.
The recognition places Ukraine among a select group of global leaders and organisations. The award ceremony underscored the country’s ongoing struggle and its people’s determination. Their fight for sovereignty continues as the war enters its third year.
