Green Party Lead Candidate Werner Graf Criticizes Governing Mayor
Berlin's election tensions flare as Greens slam mayor's leadership crisis
BERLIN (dpa/bb) — Berlin's Green Party has sharply criticized the city's governing mayor over his handling of the succession at the helm of the cultural administration.
"The bungled decision on replacing the resigned culture senator is final proof that Kai Wegner no longer has the situation under control," said parliamentary group leader Werner Graf, according to a party statement in Berlin.
"He has neither a firm grip on his Senate as governing mayor nor, apparently, any remaining authority within his party as its chairman," Graf added. He will face off against Wegner as the Green Party's top candidate in the September 20 state parliamentary elections.
Earlier, Wegner had announced—five days after Culture Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson's resignation—that Finance Senator Stefan Evers would also take over leadership of the cultural administration. The decision followed a vote by Berlin's CDU district chairpersons on Tuesday evening.
