Bill Gates' nuclear reactor in Wyoming sparks jobs and clean energy debate
A new nuclear reactor is set to rise in Kemmerer, Wyoming, marking the fourth such project in the U.S. this century. Backed by Bill Gates’ company Terra Power, the plant promises economic revival for the small town while sparking debate over nuclear energy’s future role in clean power. The project gained official approval in March 2023 when the Nuclear Regulatory Commission greenlit Terra Power’s construction plans. The design belongs to a wave of advanced reactors, touted as safer and faster to build than traditional plants. If completed by 2031, it will produce enough electricity for nearly 500,000 homes, with Salt Lake City likely to benefit.
Kemmerer’s enthusiasm runs high, as the plant will create hundreds of jobs and keep the local coal facility from shutting down. The city is even pushing for a second reactor, hoping to secure long-term economic stability. Meanwhile, Terra Power has struck deals with META to build additional reactors for powering data centres across the country. The push for nuclear energy in the region extends beyond Wyoming. Neighbouring Idaho and Utah are also vying to host new plants and uranium mines. Funding for these projects stems from a Department of Energy pilot program launched under the Trump administration, now bolstered by the Infrastructure Law. Yet not everyone supports the plan. Environmental groups argue that nuclear power’s radioactive waste remains a major hurdle, questioning its status as a truly green solution.
The Kemmerer plant represents a significant step in the U.S. nuclear revival, blending economic opportunity with energy demands. With construction underway and regional competition heating up, the project’s success could shape the future of nuclear power in the American West. The debate over its environmental impact, however, is far from settled.
