Brandenburg's emergency session tackles PCK refinery oil crisis
Potsdam (dpa/bb) — An emergency session on the situation at the PCK refinery in Schwedt has sparked a debate in Brandenburg's state parliament over the political "firewall" against the far-right AfD party. Due to the looming halt in oil deliveries from Kazakhstan to the refinery, the Economic Affairs Committee will convene an unscheduled meeting this Thursday. At the opposition's request, the Ministry of Economic Affairs is expected to address the potential consequences.
The BSW parliamentary group submitted the motion for the session, with the AfD later joining it, the BSW announced at a press conference. There were no reservations about cooperating with the AfD, the party stated, as the focus was on substantive discussion regarding the threatened oil supply stoppage.
Ludwig Scheetz, the SPD's parliamentary manager, took a different stance, declaring: "We believe weakening the firewall in this case is the wrong approach. Over the past months, we have had to observe a very, very strong alignment with the AfD on numerous issues from our former coalition partner."
The BSW group confirmed that it had approached the AfD to secure the necessary support for the emergency session, as calling such a meeting requires backing from one-fifth of lawmakers. With only nine seats, the BSW faction alone lacks the numbers to meet this threshold. The AfD, for its part, responded positively to the exchange with the BSW.
